Christian Grimmie, American singer and songwriter known for participating in The Voice and for her Covers of hit songs by contemporary pop musicians. On June 10, Friday she was shot by an unidentified male following a Before You Exit concert in Orlando, Florida, who then committed suicide. She was hospitalized in critical condition, and pronounced dead hours later.
The unidentified gunman then fatally shot himself after being tackled by her brother. Grimmie was taken to a hospital in critical condition; her death was confirmed on June 11.
Responding to the news on Twitter, The Voice wrote, “There are no words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice.”
Her coach, Adam Levine, wrote on Instagram, “I’m sad, shocked and confused [by the shooting]. We love you so much Grimmie.”
Season 9 winner Jordan Smith tweeted, “A star has been snuffed out. An amazing story unwritten.”
Finalist Amy Vachal was “shocked and heartbroken”. Before You Exit, with whom Grimmie had performed before the shooting, tweeted, “Today we lost an angel, sister, and a beloved friend.”
Police said that the 22-year-old singer had performed with the band Before You Exit at The Plaza Live in Orlando. The concert ended about 10pm, and Grimmie was shot as she signed autographs for fans at a merchandise table. Grimmie’s brother immediately tackled the gunman, who then shot and killed himself during the struggle, police said. The gunman was not identified, and police have not said why he attacked the singer. An investigation is continuing, but police credited the singer’s brother with preventing the gunman from hurting others.
“I’m done being surprised by cool things she does. She’s very talented and she’s worked incredibly hard; it’s a dangerous combination,” her brother, Mark Grimmie, told the newspaper at the time.
