Be it a birthday or an anniversary, the first thing that comes to our mind is a cake. Some people will always have a room for freshly baked yummy cakes. The Lakeview Milk Bar is one of Bengaluru’s oldest ice cream parlors. The factory sells various kinds of ice creams, pizza bases, burger buns, bread, etc. Almost all baked goodies will get manufactured in Lakeview.
When we enter Lakeview Milk Bar near Kalpana Vakharia’s house in Banaswadi, a 1.5-year-old husky will welcome us by sniffing us to his heart’s content. To the right, there will be a residence and to the left, we can see a workshop where a couple of workers prepare to deliver orders.
It has been eight decades now, but Lakeview will always be a favorite place for most of the Bengalureans. Kalpana, the owner of it says that on a typical day, the staff bakes around 150 kg of cakes and churns over 600 liters of milk for ice cream for its three branches in MG Road, Indiranagar, and Koramangala.
Digging deep into the history, Lakeview was started by James Meadow Charles in 1930. Back then, there were only three flavors of ice cream which are vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry. In 1947 after India got independence, he moved back to England by selling his business to a 19-year-old local named Vrajlal Jamnadas. In 2001, Vrajlal’s three sons split their partnership and a part went to Deepak, Kalpana’s husband. Kalpana started working full-time in the business from 1998.
Over the decades, Lakeview has been expanded its menu and will now serve various snacks such as cutlets, sandwiches, and fruit salads, apart from their signature ice creams. The popular flavors here will be chocolate, vanilla, pista, raspberry, red velvet, cheesecake, oreo, black-forest cake, and truffle variants.
