Dr. Arunoday Mondal, a Medical practitioner from West Bengal has received the most prestigious Padma Shri award for treating patients free-of-cost for over two decades in the remote Sundarbans. The 67-year-old Dr. Arunoday Mondal is a resident of Kolkata’s Lake Town. He treats over 12,000 patients on an average every year and also provides them free medicines at the hospital he has established himself in Hingalganj area in Sundarbans near the India-Bangladesh border.
He has completed his MBBS degree from the National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Mondal who lives at Birati in North 24 Parganas was a physician at Dr. B.C. Roy Memorial Hospital for Children. After quitting his job in 1980, he started to give treatments to his patients from his chamber at Birati. Every Saturday, Dr. Mondal travels to Hingalganj which is around 90 km from his residence in Kolkata. Though it takes him 6 hours to travel there, he has been continuing to go there twice a week. He says that it is to fill the gaps of treatment at government hospitals.
“I understand that the expectations of people on me will increase as I am a Padma Shri awardee now. I might also get more patients. But, I will continue to serve them to the best of my abilities,” said Mondal.
