Dr. Kushal Konwar Sarma, Professor & Head, Department of Surgery & Radiology, College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara has brought glory to the University recently received Padmashree award by the Government of India. Dr. Sarma is the first Veterinarian in India to get this award.
He is also the first Padmashree awardee in the history of Assam Agricultural University. After graduating from the College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara in 1984 with a gold medal, Dr. Sarma did his masters in Veterinary Surgery & Radiology in 1987 and Ph.D. in 1994. Then, He joined the university in 1987 as an Assistant professor and became a Professor in the Surgery & Radiology Department in 2006. He has been working as the Head from 2012. Dr. Sarma won the Certificate of Recognition for Asian elephant Conservation, Health, and Welfare by North Carolina University. Governor of Assam Prof. Jagdish Mukhi has given him the title, “Elephant Man of Asia”.
Dr. Sarma served one month in Indonesia as an International Elephant Expert and also as a guest faculty of North Carolina State University and the New Mexico University of the US. He also joined the Rhino translocation program in Royal Chitwan National Park, Nepal. He has given so many National and International seminars and workshops mostly on an elephant, rhino and other wildlife healthcare issues of the animals.
Dr. Sarma has dedicated his entire life to the healthcare of wild animals especially elephants and rhinos in particular. From the past three decades, he has been indulged in the service of wildlife without taking any time for himself. He is now the leader of the veterinary team for the reintroduction of rhinos in Manas National Park. He has been working as the Chairman of the Blue Cross Society, Assam.
