82-year-old Yogi Aeron recently received the most honorable Padma Shri award this year as he has been treating burn & bite victims for free in the Himalayas, for over 35 years.
Aeron has been treating patients with disfigured or burnt faces for over 25 years now without any fee. Aeron resides in Malsi which is 10 km away from Dehradun. He starts his day with a big line up of appointments. Aeron hails from Muzaffarnagar district and is a graduate from King George Medical College in Lucknow. In 1982, he flew to the United States and specialized in plastic surgery.
In 1983, he bought a four-acre campus and created a learning space for the children and a treatment facility for the underprivileged. Aeron also runs a two-week camp twice a year during which patients below the poverty line seek medical help from Aeron who gets the assistance of a team of 15 to 16 US-based doctors.
There are still more than 10,000 patients on his waiting list and Aeron always strives to find funds for them. Even when he came to know that he is receiving the prestigious Padma Shri Award, he simply remarked that it is fine but he has thousands of patients in his waiting list and is hoping that some help will arrive for them as well. Sometimes, he gets some help from his friends in India and abroad and also the government.
