Just outside the Chepauk Cricket Stadium, a 59-year-old die-hard cricket fan R Bhaskaran is known for mending cricket bats, helmets, gloves, and pads. He repairs the cricketing gears even for the Indian cricket team as well.

R Bhaskaran comes to work at 9:30 every day in the morning and completes his work in the evening. Apart from the cricketing gear, he also carries a picture of Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar with him. In fact, it is a picture with both Sachin and Bhaskaran having a broad smile on their faces. Bhaskaran has fixed the former Indian skipper’s cricketing gear as well. “He is my good friend,” says Bhaskaran about the God of Cricket. “Be it his cricket pads, shoes or gloves, Sachin wants only me to fix his gear” adds Bhaskaran proudly.

Bhaskaran has also met ace cricketers like Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Azharuddin, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, etc. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Board hired him as the go-to person to fix the cricket gears of the Indian team in 1993. Bhaskaran used to earn around Rs.500 to Rs.1000 on a normal day fixing cricket gear, bags and shoes, and Rs. 1000 a day during the IPL season. Showing his duty pass, he says that he will get his duty pass into the player’s area at the end of the month every year. “I’ll be in during the IPL. I work with all teams repairing shoes, pads, and helmets,” added R Bhaskaran.
