SV Krishna Reddy’s Subhalagnam – An opinion by Abhiram

Radha (Aamani) is a middle-class housewife who dreams to become rich and wealthy. One day, she sells her husband Madhu (Jagapathi Babu) to Latha (Roja) for 1 crore. But later, she realizes the value of people and regrets her decision.

The movie is inspired by the mythology Sree Krishna Thulabharam. This is a story of two women and doesn’t have any opinion of a man. The audience never got the doubt why Radha is still with Madhu even after getting him married to another woman. Because the director has already made a point that she is so innocent who believed that Latha also has equal rights to her husband after the marriage even though the topic of divorce never came in between Radha and Madhu.

In fact, if Madhu leaves with Latha after the wedding, then Radha might not realize her mistake. So, for making her realize her mistake, Madhu has to be with her that is why the word divorce comes only in the climax. Also, it would become dangerous if the audience connects more with the story of Madhu or Latha. Then the writer cannot tell us what he wants to say and everything will seem illogical.

Also, there is no scope for comedy in a serious script like this which is why the director has used some special comedy tracks to lighten the mood and balance the emotions of the audience. Here, the writer took some cinematic liberties to make the audience overlook them and connect well with the storyline.

Writing and making a movie out of such a complex plot are two hectic tasks. Any small mistake will make it look like an insult to the institution of marriage. Maybe that is the reason why ‘Subhalagnam’ got a special place in SV Krishna Reddy’s career even after delivering blockbuster movies like ‘Yamaleela’.

We should also remember Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry’s lyrics in ‘Chilaka Ye Thodu Leka’ song and how he has interpreted the entire story in a single song.

Finally, I really thank SV KrishnaReddy, Bhupathi Raja, Diwakar Babu, Aswini Dutt for giving us such an entertaining family story.

Writer’s Note:

Most of us like to get involved in the story and connect with the emotions of the lead actors while watching a film. So, here I am to share my opinions on some of my favorite films. I haven’t done any film appreciation courses and I am just doing this out of passion.
